All of our donors mean so much to us here at the Mission. We know that every gift is given in love, and each is a special blessing to our guests. Those blessings are what help mend broken lives, including those torn apart by divorce.

Marivelle came to us ten years ago when her husband left her for another woman. She had just given birth to their second child two weeks before. Unable to keep her apartment, and reeling from the emotional blow and the strain of caring for two tiny children, Marivelle came to Joy House.

She poured her heart out to the counselor, who had been through the same pain Marivelle was feeling. The counselor told her that Jesus is the only one who can truly heal a broken heart. Marivelle reached out to the Lord, and found that healing for herself.

Joy House helped Marivelle put the pieces of her broken life back together again. Wanting to continue her walk with Jesus, she joined a church where she made wonderful new friends. She found a home, a car, and a job. “The Lord has done these good things,” she said at the time.

From guest to supporter

Several years after we featured Marivelle’s story in our newsletter, we received a very special gift, along with a letter that pretty much says it all:

“We took shelter at Joy House once, and I will never forget the life-changing experience I had there of receiving Jesus Christ as my savior.

“It’s still a struggle being a single mom, but I’m so grateful to the Lord for providing jobs for me so my family’s needs are met . . . I want to be faithful and I believe that the Lord wants me to give back to where my family has been so blessed.
“I thank God for Milwaukee Rescue Mission’s ministry. May He continue to save many that walk through your doors and continue to bless every one of you who labors for Jesus Christ at the Mission.

            “In Christ, Marivelle”

Thank you, Marivelle, for your faithfulness, and thank you to everyone who has helped make the Milwaukee Rescue Mission a place of hope for the poor and homeless for 115 years!
